Genge Music is one of the music genres in Kenya that is very popular amongst Kenyan youth. However, while majority of scholars have devoted considerable attention to the study of songs, Genge Music studies remain limited. This is despite the fact that this music has frequently provided an inspiring soundtrack for the dissemination of youths’ views. Therefore, this paper critically analysed Genge Music as a platform for youth social activism. Specifically, the paper evaluated discursive strategies in the songs that portrayed social activism. Postmodernism Theory aligned to Jean-Francois Lyotard’s idea of postmodernism which is rooted in the subversion of institutions and ideological forms of knowledge as instruments of oppression in the society since they have failed to capture the local realities was adopted in the study. This paper also adopted Critical Discourse Analysis Theory based on Norman Fairclough's perspective to understand how the language in the songs have been used to portray social activism.. The researcher had already subscribed to Genge Music internet channels for copyright reasons. Purposive sampling technique was used to arrive at 5 Genge songs that portrayed social activism. These songs included: Kuna Siku Youth Wataungana by Wakadinali, Kwenda na Khalicartel 3 by Khaligraph Jones, Tujiangalie na Sauti Sol,and Wajinga Nyinyi by King Kaka. Collected data was translated, coded and organized according to social activism strategies. The data was then analysed and interpreted and the results were presented qualitatively in line with the objectives, theory and scope of the study. The findings showed that social activism is entrenched in Genge Music which is portrayed through discursive strategies like rap, metaphors and repetition used in the songs. These discursive strategies used in the songs served to subvert entrenched customs, beliefs, institutions, education, language and religion as instruments of oppression. This paper will help in shedding light on issues of concern to the youth and hopefully help the policy makers by offering reference material in the formulation of policies and strategies that will address these issues. More specifically the findings will contribute to the field of discourse analysis in Kiswahili, literary linguistics and Oral literature and will help linguistics and literature scholars as reference material in understanding Genge Music. Finally, this paper will bring in a new perspective in understanding Genge Music in our society.
