ENGLISH

This study sought to analyse the attitudes of the students pursuing science and arts courses towards teaching Communication Skills in Kiswahili in Kenyan national polytechnics. Also, to investigate the causes of the attitudes and establish their views on the importance of using Kiswahili in teaching communication skills. A descriptive survey design was used to guide the study. Five Kenyan national polytechnics and a sample of 148 respondents was involved. Balian’s (1988) formula was used to select the sample size. Additionaly, adapted Likert’s scale was used to collect data as well as a questionnaire and open ended questions. Concomitantly, Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The results indicated that 2.82% of the 142 respondents, depicted negative attitude, while 97.18% were mostly positive about being taught Communication Skills in Kiswahili. Students pursuing arts-related courses posted low positive attitudes compared to those pursuing science courses. This positivity seems to have been caused by their realization of the importance of service delivery to their customers in the field, hence the need to use Kiswahili in teaching communication skills in Kenyan technical institutes. In this perspective, the concerned students saw the importance of using effective communication in service delivery in the field. Hence, the use of Kiswahili in teaching communication skills parallel to English would sharpen skills used in communication. The findings of this study are of essence to the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in developing education policy to the concerned institutions.

Key words: Attitudes, combination, communication skills, Kiswahili, technical institute’s students.
2024-04-01T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://journals.editononline.com/index.php/eajk/article/view/487 Teknolojia ibuka na ufundishaji wa somo la Kiswahili 2024-03-13T09:38:53+00:00 Florence M Anyonje anyonjeflorence@gmail.com Milton Kigaro Lihanda miltonkigaro@yahoo.co.uk

ENGLISH

Use of modern technology has changed ways of communication and work environments. It is assumed that these technologies can be a solution to most of the challenges encountered in social, economic and environmental spheres. In sectors like health, banking, business, transport, governance, agriculture, industry and even communication, these modern technologies are being used. The education sector has not been left behind, especially in the days of the Coronavirus. Online learning has taken centre stage in most higher learning Institutions, especially during the lockdown period. Kiswahili is a compulsory subject in all schools in Kenya; hence, there is a need to teach it well so that students can use it in daily communication to achieve national education goals. Modern technologies like the internet, computers, video, radio, phones, satellite, television, and laptops can all be used to make the instructional process interesting, memorable and engaging for learners. Derek asserts that the use of modern technologies in teaching helps the learners do research, get hands-on experience, and prepare for the world of work. According to Grabe and Grabe, these technology's use of technology in the classroom cannot be underscored. With the growing number of learners in the classroom, teachers have a higher workload, and technology would be a solution for higher output. Murray and Waller rightly put it that technology engages all the senses, and this is good for teaching language skills like listening, speaking, reading and writing. The findings in this study show that different technologies play a very important role in the instructional process; hence, all teachers of Kiswahili need to incorporate technology in their lessons.

Keywords: Education, emerging technologies, Kiswahili, learning, teaching.

ENGLISH

Politicians have the tendency to use language that appeals to the people during campaigns in a unique way to change the minds of the people, so that they can accompany their wishes to control them behaviorally and ideologically while aiming to increase their popularity and convince the people to support them. In such, politicians pull power to their side in an unclear way, a situation that causes many listeners to fail to understand the information given by not understanding the terms used in those speeches, thus making bad political decisions. Power is evident where there are conflicting opinions between politicians. This article therefore aims to identify the contribution of language as a tool that demonstrates power in society by analyzing some of the tenets that demonstrated power and authority in the political discourses during the 2022 election in Kenya as it appears in the YouTube digital platform. This study will focus on the analytical design by evaluating the relational data that will be described in prose. The study is based on the academic research area. The target group of the research are the debates of politicians during the 2022 election campaigns in Kenya. Purposive sampling will be used while the data will be collected from the You-tube network using content analysis method and presented descriptively. The data that will be collected will help in revealing the reasons why citizens do not understand hidden information that is presented by politicians in their debates, which is the source of citizens not understanding the information and therefore making bad decisions by choosing the wrong leaders. This article will be involved in solving the problem of citizens not understanding the specific information of politicians in their face-to-face debates.
2024-09-20T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 ASIGE ABOGE
