Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly positioned as a disruptive force in journalism, reshaping how news is produced, distributed, and consumed. In Kenya, where traditional media institutions coexist with dynamic digital platforms, AI adoption presents both opportunities and challenges for the future of journalism. This paper explores the transformative potential of AI in Kenya’s media industry, guided by key research questions: How is AI redefining journalism practice in Kenya? What ethical safeguards are necessary for AI‑driven journalism? How can Kenyan media house balance AI innovation with sustainability? What role should universities and regulators play in preparing future journalists? Drawing on 20 scholarly sources spanning global scholarship, African case studies, Kenyan research, and foundational theories, the analysis highlights AI’s role in enhancing newsroom efficiency, expanding audience reach, and fostering innovation. At the same time, it interrogates ethical concerns such as algorithmic bias, misinformation, and the erosion of editorial independence. Findings suggest that while AI can strengthen the relevance and sustainability of Kenyan journalism, its success depends on balancing technological innovation with ethical safeguards and professional accountability. The paper concludes by proposing a collaborative approach—linking universities, media houses, and technology firms—to ensure that AI serves as a tool to reinforce journalistic integrity rather than undermine it.
