Abstract

This study assessed the factors influencing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in Kenyan academic libraries, guided by the Technology Acceptance Model. As academic libraries increasingly seek to enhance service delivery through innovative technologies, AI has emerged as a promising tool for improving information management and access to library resources. However, despite its potential, AI adoption across Kenyan academic libraries remains uneven. A descriptive survey design employing quantitative and qualitative approaches was used to collect and analyse data from library staff, postgraduate students, and key informants. The findings revealed that AI integration is significantly influenced by the availability of ICT infrastructure, staff technical competencies, management support, institutional policies, and financial resources. The study concludes that successful AI adoption requires sustained institutional commitment, continuous staff capacity building, adequate funding, and supportive AI governance and ICT policies. It recommends increased investment in ICT infrastructure, continuous professional training, and the development of clear AI policies and ethical frameworks to facilitate sustainable AI implementation in academic libraries. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on AI adoption in academic libraries by providing empirical evidence on the institutional and organisational factors shaping AI integration in the Kenyan context. The findings also offer practical guidance for university administrators, library managers, and policymakers seeking to advance sustainable AI adoption in academic libraries.
