Abstract

Utafiti huu ulinuia kutafuta maoni ya wanafunzi wa taasisi za kiufundi za kitaifa kuhusu nafasi ya lugha ya Kiswahili katika elimu ya kiufundi. Muundo wa Uchunguzi Kimaelezo ulitumiwa, huku taasisi 5 za kiufundi za kitaifa na sampuli ya wanafunzi 148 na wakufunzi 20 wakishirikishwa katika utafiti. Aidha, utafiti huu ulitumia hojaji na mahojiano kukusanya data. Mbinu ya Yaliyomo Mchanganuo ilitumiwa kuchanganua data. Matokeo ya utafiti huu yalidhihirisha kuwa lugha ya Kiswahili huchukua nafasi kuu katika mtaala wa elimu ya ufundi katika taasisi za kiufundi za kitaifa nchini. Kwa sasa, Kiswahili sio lugha ya ufundishaji katika taasisi hizi, ila hutumiwa na wakufunzi wa kozi mbalimbali kudadavua dhana tata, hasa miongoni mwa wanafunzi wa astashahada. Pia, utafiti huu zaidi uligundua kuwa Kiswahili ni lugha ya mawasiliano kwa wanafunzi wengi. Kutokana na majukumu haya yaliyodokezwa na wasailiwa, utafiti unapendekeza kwa Wizara ya Elimu ya Juu, Sayanzi na Teknolojia (MOHEST), ikishirikiana Taasisi ya Ukuzaji Mitaala (KICD) kubuni mkakati wa kuanzisha ufundishaji wa lugha ya Kiswahili kama somo katika taasisi za ufundi nchini. Kwa kufanya hivyo, taasisi tajwa zitakuwa zikihimilisha dhima za kiakademia na kijamii ambazo hutekelezwa na Kiswahili katika mtaala wa elimu ya ufundi. Utafiti zaidi unaweza kulinganisha na kulinganua mielekeo ya wanafunzi wa taasisi za ufundi kuhusu Kiswahili na Kiingereza kama lugha ya kutoa mafunzo miongoni mwa wanafunzi wa astashahada.

 

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the views of students of Kenyan national technical institutions on the role of Kiswahili in technical education. Descriptive survey design was used and five national technical institutes were used in the study. A sample of 148 respondents and 20 instructors was involved in the study. Also, in the collection of data, questionnaire and interview methods were used. Additionally, content analysis method was used in the data analysis. The findings of the study implored that Kiswahili language has an important role in technical education in Kenyan national technical institutes. At the moment, Kiswahili language is not the medium of instruction, however the instructors teaching various courses use it to expound complex terms among the certificate students. Additionally, the study found out that Kiswahili was the medium of communication among many students, among many other functions. Therefore, from the roles identified by the respondents, the study proposes to the Ministry of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MOHEST) in collaboration with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to come up with a strategy to start teaching Kiswahili as a subject in technical institutes in the country. Therefore, in doing so, the mentioned institutes will be buttressing the academic and social functions performed by Kiswahili in technical education curriculum. Further research can compare and contrast the attitudes of technical students towards use of Kiswahili and English as a language of instruction among certificate students.
